Indonesia rejects Corby sentence plea
ABC Friday 28 Mar 2008 Date: March 28 2008 --- In Indonesia, the convicted Australian drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has lost an appeal against her 20-year prison sentence. Our reporter in Indonesia Gavin Fang reports from Jakarta that after deliberating for months, Indonesia's Supreme Court today ruled against an appeal by Schapelle Corby to have her sentence reduced. Corby was convicted of importing about 4 kilograms of cannabis into Bali in 2004. The court has yet to release the reasons behind its judgement, but the decision means Corby is now not due to be released from prison until 2024. Her best hope for an early return home may be through a prisoner transfer treaty being negotiated with Indonesia. Although the Indonesian Government has indicated that it wants prisoners to serve at least two thirds of their jail term before being eligible for transfer. http://www.abc.net.au/ra/news/stories/200803/s2202204.htm?tab=asia
