Typically Spanish Wednesday 09 Apr 2008 Date: April 9 2008 Cataluña to treat the chronically ill with a Cannabis derivative drug. It follows the successful testing of the drug Sativex on 207 patients The Catalan Government, La Generalitat, has given the go ahead for the therapeutic use of cannabis on patients who are suffering from the side-effects of chemotherapy. Patients given the drug, see a marked reduction in nausea and vomiting. It follows a study carried out by the regional government and supervised by the Spanish Ministry for Health. It cost half a million € and saw the participation of 207 people in six university hospitals in Cataluña. The cannabis is given in the form of a pill, Sativex, already in use in Canada, and in a dose equivalent to a joint every four hours for five days. Multiple Sclerosis patients also reported a reduction in pain when they take the drug, and those suffering from anorexia often report a return of their appetite. Catalan health councillor, Marina Geli, said the drug would be used on a compassionate basis given that Sativex is not yet authorised for use in Spain or registered in Europe. The cost of the treatment for those chronically ill is 300 Euro a year. http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news/publish/article_15997.shtml
