UK: Cannabis Smuggler Given 11 Years
BBC News Saturday 12 Apr 2008 Up to 500kg of cannabis is believed to have been brought from The Netherlands to the UK between August 2004 and March 2006, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard. Jailing Michael Hartshorne, 43, of Stourbridge, Judge Nicholas Webb said he was "near to the top" of the gang. Four others were given prison sentences for their part in trafficking drugs. Haul intercepted Alistair MacKenzie-Crow, 51, of Norwood Avenue, Cradley Heath, West Midlands, was sentenced to six years in prison. He was convicted of driving 130kg of cannabis into the UK in September 2006. Sarah Chater, 41, of Whitehall Walk, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for conspiracy to import cannabis after being convicted. Darren Hillyer, 42, of Aldermans Green Road, Coventry, and his brother Craig Hillyer, 35, of no fixed address, were jailed for 15 months each. They admitted their role in the plot was to drive cannabis with a street value of £500,000 to the warehouses. The court was told Hartshorne, of Cemetery Road, helped organise the "day to day" aspects of the operation, including transporting the drugs to warehouses in Dudley and Brierley Hill in the West Midlands. His part in the plot was uncovered by police in March 2006 when a haul of cannabis worth £1m was intercepted. Hartshorne was convicted by a jury last week of importing cannabis and conspiracy to import the drug. The judge said the total amount of drugs involved in the overall operation "must have been several millions of pounds". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7343765.stm
