One Of UK's Biggest Cannabis Hauls
Saturday 12 Apr 2008 Police discovered about 4,000 plants when they raided a disused unit on the Flixborough Industrial Estate. Two illegal immigrants appeared in court yesterday charged with drug cultivation. At the scene of the swoop, Humberside Police Det Chief Supt Chris Baker said the haul would be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds in street value. He said: "It's certainly the biggest of its time in North Lincolnshire, and probably the biggest in Humberside. "Discovering this haul cuts the amount of cannabis which is going on to the streets - not necessarily in North Lincolnshire, but further afield. I just don't understand how this had been going on for so long and had not been discovered." The building, at Bellwin House Business Park, on Bellwin Drive, Flixborough, was raided by police shortly after 1pm on Wednesday. Officers discovered between 3,000 and 4,000 growing cannabis plants in various stages of cultivation. The premises were also equipped with a sophisticated lighting, heating and ventilation system. Vietnamese nationals Quang Van Tran (36) and Anh Duc Ngugen (45), neither of whom have a fixed address, yesterday appeared at North Lincolnshire Magistrates' Court, charged with cannabis cultivation on April 9. They both denied the allegation. After hearing the circumstances surrounding the charges, magistrates decided their powers were insufficient to deal with the case and directed it should be dealt with by a judge at Grimsby Crown Court. Jason Nicholson, defending, did not apply for bail because, he said, his clients were not at this stage able to offer a fixed address. The two defendants, who used an interpreter throughout the hearing, were both remanded in custody. They will next appear at the Scunthorpe court on Thursday. It is expected the case will be committed to Grimsby Crown Court on May 22. http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/
