UK: It's a Growing Industry, Says Marks

DRUG smuggler turned author Howard Marks believes the growing number of cannabis factories is evidence of the changing nature of drug production.

With many types of cannabis becoming increasingly strong, users are relying on locally-grown produce to meet demand, he said.

Marks, who grew up in Kenfig Hill, near Bridgend, said home-grown drugs were less likely to be contaminated, and could even be cheaper.

At the height of his trafficking career, the outspoken, self-styled Mr Nice, had 43 aliases and spent years in jail after being caught smuggling consignments of up to 30 tons from Pakistan and Thailand to America and Canada.

Now, he said, people didn’t have to rely on smuggled imports and had a quality crop right on their doorsteps.

“The suppliers have changed from gangsters to gardeners,” said the Oxford graduate, a long-time campaigner for the legalisation of the drug.

“I would imagine that a lot more is being grown that the police don’t know about,” he added.

“The demand has never been satisfied.”
