MP Takes a Tough Stance on Cannabis

East Lothian Courier

Thursday 17 Apr 2008

ANNE MOFFAT MP has reaffirmed her backing to the Westminster Government’s proposed upgrading of cannabis from a class C to a class B drug, describing the widely available narcotic as a scourge on some of East Lothian’s most vulnerable people.

Ms Moffat, who was a psychiatric nurse before entering Parliament in 2001, is demanding tougher sentencing for offenders, and improved education on the dangers of using the drug.

“I feel very strongly that cannabis should be re-classified, as it can cause psychosis, schizophrenia and paranoia in young people,” said the county MP.

“It is often the most vulnerable people who are taking it, and it tends to lead them onto much harder drugs such as heroin and cocaine. That is why we must take a tougher stance.”

The maximum sentence for possession of cannabis was reduced from five years to two years when it was reclassified as a class C drug in 2002.
