UK: Pro-drug Blunder

Islington Gazette

Wednesday 23 Apr 2008

LIBERAL Democrats have been left red-faced - after campaigners were caught distributing leaflets calling for the legalisation of cannabis.

The leaflets were designed with perforations to allow them to be torn into "roaches" - small cardboard tubes that act as a filter in joints.

The flyers, entitled Lib Dems On Drugs, were handed out to passers-by outside City and Islington College in Goswell Road, Finsbury.

The flyers posed the question: "Do you think our politicians should stop wrecking people's lives just because they use cannabis?"

Deective Superintendent David Miveld, of Islington police, said: "We strongly disagree with the distribution of material which seems to encourage cannabis use and could have a negative influence on young people."

But Islington Lib-Dems claimed the leaflets were five years old and were distributed by mistake. Member for community safety Councillor Marisha Ray said: "This has nothing to do with the Liberal Democrats, it is the work of independent campaigners."

Lib-Dem youth spokesman Adrian Smith said: "Someone came into our office last week looking for literature. It's our fault because we still have some of the leaflets and we should have marked that they are not available for under-18s. We've disposed of the rest.
