UK: How should the Tories tackle drugs?

The Telegraph

Friday 25 Apr 2008

Boris Johnson has become one of the first senior Conservative Party politicians to advocate the legalisation of cannabis for medicinal use.

"I do think there is a case when cannabis is being used to alleviate severe and chronic pain that the law should be flexible," commented Mr Johnson, who is the Conservative candidate for the London mayoral elections.

The Tory party has supported the Government's plans to take a harder line on cannabis by reclassifying it as a Grade B drug, although David Cameron describes himself as "relaxed" about legalising cannabis for medicinal use.

As far as harder drugs are concerned, the Conservative leader has previously said that he would not rule out a scheme to create safe rooms where addicts inject themselves in controlled surroundings, to curb the level of overdoses.

How do you think the Tories should tackle drugs? Do you agree with Mr Johnson that cannabis should be legalised for medicinal purposes?
