UK: Gordon Brown to make cannabis class B drug Christopher Hope, The Telegraph Saturday 26 Apr 2008 Gordon Brown is to defy his own high-powered group of experts and plough ahead with plans to reclassify cannabis as a class B drug. A review by the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs will tell the Prime Minister on Monday that cannabis should retain its class C status. But Whitehall sources believe Mr Brown is now almost certain to over-rule the experts, although a formal decision is unlikely to be taken next week because of purdah rules around the May 1 local elections. Many of the 23-strong council of experts could feel they have to resign if the Prime Minister ignores their recommendation. Since the council was set up in 1971, only one prime minister has over-ruled its recommendations. The drug was downgraded from class B to class C by David Blunkett, when he was home secretary, in January 2004 to enable police to concentrate on tackling hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
