UK: Two charged after £100,000 drugs haul
Sunderland Echo Saturday 26 Apr 2008 A team of 20 police officers were involved in the swoops, which hit houses in Bethune Avenue, Portland Avenue and Queensbury Road on Seaham's Deneside Estate. Cannabis resin, estimated to weigh 10 kilos, was recovered along with a quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine, which is now being sent for analysis. Also found were 5,000 tablets, suspected to be valium, and will be tested, with £15,000 in cash, thought to be the proceeds of crime, taken away. Five adults, three men and two women, were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs as part of Operation Dumain Corner. A 21-year-old-man has been charged with the importation of a Class C drug and a 28-year-old man has been charged with the importation of a Class A drug, importation of a Class C drug and possession of a Class C drug with intent to supply. The pair were expected to appear before Peterlee Magistrates' Court today. A third man, aged in his 50s, was given a caution. Two women aged 20 and 27, have been released on bail pending further inquiries after being quizzed by detectives. Inspector Vince Addison, who leads the community policing team in Seaham, said: "This operation was a great success, but it's only part of our ongoing campaign to combat drug dealing in the communities in this area. "I am confident that the local community will applaud police action because we know they are concerned about drug supply and we want to catch these criminals." The raids happened on Thursday afternoon as a result of concerns voiced by residents. Insp Addison added: "I can assure the residents that were take as dim a view of drug taking as they do and will continue operations to disrupt the supply within our communities. "This is part of our ongoing work. "I think we know that people are using cannabis recreationally, and that's not just in Seaham but society as a whole, and there is concern about the increasing availability of cocaine, which is also seen as a recreational drug. "It's become more readily available and more affordable, so increasingly we are seeing more of the drug. "It's a different sort of substance to heroin, but can be just as harmful." The co-ordinated raids took place at 3pm on Thursday. http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/Two-charged-after-100000-drugs.4023687.jp
