Australia: Police under fire over Mardi Grass drugs focus

ABC Regional

Monday 05 May 2008

Organisers of the Nimbin Mardi Grass festival say police were too concerned with drugs possession and should have done more to stop assaults.

Eight people have been charged and issued cannabis cautions since Friday.

There are also separate investigations into assaults on a 22-year-old woman and 17-year-old girl.

Police say though most charges were drug related, Operation Brewarrana was equally focused on violent and antisocial behaviour.

But festival organiser Andrew Kavasilas says he does not agree.

"I think the only cannabis that would have been seized was small amounts, personal possession type stuff," he said.

"The biggest problem at mardi grass, again, was alcohol and assaults, that kind of thing we didn't see police spending very much time at all in fact on that."
