U.K:Figures released as drug is reclassified

THE number of cannabis farms discovered by police in West Yorkshire has rocketed in the last two years, the YEP can reveal.

Latest police statistics show that the number of “farms” raided by police across the county more than doubled between 2005 and last year.

Yesterday Home Secretary Jacqui Smith overruled Government experts by announcing that cannabis will be reclassified as a Class B drug.

Ms Smith said there was a “compelling case” for the Government to act and that it was right to “err on the side of caution and protect the public.”

Her action came despite the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) concluding that the health dangers from cannabis did not justify its inclusion in the higher category from its existing Class C status.

The move was welcomed by senior West Yorkshire Police officers.

A force spokesman said: “The Association of Chief Police Officers’ position on cannabis has been well articulated. We stand by our recommendation made to the Advisory Council on Misuse of Drugs that cannabis should be restored to the category of Class B drug.”

The steady rise in the number of cannabis farms followed the declassification of cannabis from Class B to C in January 2004.

The figures show that in from January 1 to December 31, 2005 a total of 166 premises were raided and found to be used for cannabis cultivation.

The following year the figure rose to 200 – and last year it reached a high of 371.
