U.K:POLICE FOLLOW NOSES TO £5,000 DRUG HAUL

Press Release

This Is Gloucestershire

Friday 16 May 2008

Two police officers proved they had a nose for crime when they smelt a distinct aroma wafting from the home of Adam Watts. It was the unmistakable scent of cannabis plants - and as soon as the officers went back to their station they obtained a search warrant and raided Watts' house.

They found more cannabis growing in two areas of the 39-year-old's house in Oakfields, Coleford, said Julian Kesner, prosecuting, at Gloucester Crown Court.

He said the officers had been called out to another house in the area on January 9 to deal with an unrelated matter, but were distracted by the smell of cannabis.

Officers found 71 cannabis plants with an estimated value of £5,000 Mr Kesner said.

Representing Watts, Paul Grumbar said his client used the cannabis for pain relief from injuries suffered in an accident.

"There is little way of knowing, when these seeds start out, how much cannabis will result," he said.

Judge Martin Picton accepted the cannabis was for Watts' own use.

"Generally people who cultivate cannabis for sale go to prison," he told Watts.

"But I'm dealing with you on the basis of you growing it for your own use."

He reminded that growing cannabis, even for personal pain relief, was still illegal.

Watts was given a 12 months community order with supervision and also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £100.
