U.K:Soldiers test positive for drugs

Press Release

BBC News

Sunday 18 May 2008

Ten soldiers serving with the Black Watch have tested positive for illegal drugs in a random test, the Army has confirmed.

The tests were carried out on the soldiers, who form part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, at their Fort George barracks near Inverness.

An Army spokeswoman said the tests on all 370 personnel stationed at the base took place about a month ago.

Any soldier found to have taken drugs will be discharged from the military.

The spokeswoman said: "It was a random drugs test and there were a total of 10 positives, who were all junior ranking soldiers.

"This is unacceptable behaviour. They are all told from day one when they go into the Army what will happen to them if they take drugs, and every soldier receives a lecture once a year to remind them what will happen.

"So there is no excuse, they know what will happen if they test positive."

Soldiers who test positive for drugs have the option of appealing the result.
