U.K:Drugs crackdown in Norfolk

Press Release

Norwich Evening News

Monday 19 May 2008

Drugs dealers across Norfolk face a rude awakening this week as police promise to raid criminals blighting communities.

The tough approach is part of national drugs week which launches today and will also see help being offered to substance abusers. Detectives plan to act on intelligence gathered in recent months to crack drugs rings in the county.

Det Chief Insp Colin Pearce, from the drugs and serious crime squad, said: “Throughout the week officers will be targeting drug dealers across the county; however, our work does not stop there - people dealing in drugs can be assured that we will continue to track you down. Illegal drugs activity will not be tolerated in Norfolk so be warned.

“Drugs can and do affect all parts of society and we need to get the dealers out of our communities and ensure the right treatment is provided for those dependent on drugs.

“Our work with our partners in the Norfolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team is essential in providing that treatment and education and we will continue to work with them to reduce drug use and drug related crime in the county.”

Mr Pearce said the focus would be on class A drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine. But cannabis factories will also be targeted as part of the operation.

He would not comment on the numbers of raids to be carried out but said they would be focus on urban centres such as Norwich, King's Lynn and Yarmouth, although there may be some in rural areas.

Norfolk police are also highlighting the role the public has to play in cracking crime. Sgt Julie Johnson, of the Heartsease Thorpe Hamlet safer neighbourhood team, was involved in the discovery of a cannabis factory in Gertrude Road, Norwich, in April and said that information from the community was key to the find.

“Local residents became suspicious following the snow fall we had over Easter. Snow had settled on every house in Gertrude Road except one suggesting that something suspicious was going on inside the house - the heat from the cultivation systems caused premature thawing, she said.

The drug and alcohol team will be using the week as an opportunity to highlight the support available to those looking to kick the habit.
