U.K:Arrests mark launch of National Tackling Drugs Week (Forcewide)

Press Release

Avon And Somerset Police

Monday 19 May 2008

Suspected drug dealers in Bristol were today (May 19) given an early morning wake-up call by police executing warrants across the city in a joint operation with officers from the city council's housing services.

Around 100 police officers, accompanied by Bristol City Council housing officers, were involved in the arrest of people from properties in the south of Bristol.

The raids marked the start of National Tackling Drugs Week which is aimed at raising awareness of the work being undertaken by police and other agencies in the Safer Bristol Partnership to tackle drugs and reduce drug-related crime.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is working with various other partner agencies across the force area as part of the week-long campaign.

In Bristol police support group officers and neighbourhood policing teams were involved in the execution of the drugs warrants.

They were assisted by dog handlers specially trained for locating drugs, financial investigators and evidence gatherers.

In Bristol alone police seized 120 cannabis plants and also found heroin, cocaine and other drugs.

At other properties a firearm and cash were recovered. Police also found 300 counterfeit DVDs and information relation to other offences.

By midday 11 people were arrested and more warrants are still planned at various properties across the city.

Neighbourhood inspector Jeff Foreman said: "The activity in Bristol was part of an ongoing drive to crack down on drug-related crime to improve the quality of life for communities.

"Tackling drug dealers is day to day business for us, this is the second day of action within five months for South Bristol and last time we recovered nearly three quarters of a million pounds worth of drugs.

"Officers seized cash and assets believed to be linked to criminality and a number of individuals were arrested.

"The operation today was a huge success in identifying suspected drug dealers and disrupting drug markets."

Neighbourhood policing teams are working hard with partner agencies to ensure community concerns regarding drugs are reported and action is taken.

Inspector Foreman added: "We will not hesitate to act on intelligence from the community and would always urge people to raise any concerns they may have with their local neighbourhood policing team."

Bristol City Councillor Derek Pickup, Executive Member for Care, Tackling Deprivation and Crime and Chair of the Safer Bristol Partnership, said: "Today's joint operation by the police and city council sends out a clear message of zero tolerance towards drug misuse on our property.

"We can and will continue to work with the police to take action against anyone who deals drugs from one of our tenancies. The action is part of a ongoing programme which has proved very effective in both bringing those responsible for breaking the law to account and in addressing drug dealing."
