U.K:Police launch drugs raids in Nelson and Rawtenstall Peter Magill Lancashire Telegraph Tuesday 20 May 2008 Today saw the launch of Lancashire Police's Protecting People initiative, focusing on tracking down the major players in the county's narcotics industry. Raids were carried out on three homes in Nelson and Rawtenstall to kickstart the operation. In a double swoop in Nelson, police executed warrants at properties in Westmoreland Street and Summers Street. Police arrested a 38-year-old man at Westmoreland Street on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and abstracting elecrtricity. The property in Summers Street was searched and drugs-growing equipment, along with six mature plants, were seized for further analysis. Pc Ian Willis said community beat managers and police community support officers had followed up the raids with a leaflet campaign, explaining about Protecting People and the scheme's aims. Later police conducted a similar raid at a house in Hardman Street, Rawtenstall, from where cannabis worth an estimated £900 was recovered. Officers detained a 17-year-old local man, also on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply cannabis. Police also seized cash and more drug-growing apparatus. Det Chief Insp Ian Critchley, of Burnley CID, said: "The clear message is that we have identified criminal organisations and networks, operating within our boroughs, and we will take action, over a sustained period of time, to target offenders and bring them to justice."
