Wednesday 21 May 2008

POLICE raided homes in Hyndburn today in a bid to cause "enormous disruption" to the area's drugs supply.

The police crackdown saw swoops in Hyndburn targeting suspected dealers.

Up to 30 officers were deployed in morning raids as part of the county-wide 'Operation Protecting People'.

Warrants were executed on homes in Norfolk Grove, Church, Lee Street, Springhill Road and Marsden Street all Accrington and Game Street, Great Harwood.

Six men aged between 16 and 42 and two women aged 17 and 31 were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences and will be questioned tomorrow.

Officers said they seized a quantity of what they believed to be cannabis and heroin.

The swoops involved a number of specialist police included operational support units, CID, drug detection dogs and neighbourhood policing teams.

Chief Insp Richard Morgan said their aim was to cause enormous disruption to drugs supply.

He said: "We want to drive a wagon and horses through their normal activity.

"We treat reports of drug dealing very seriously and that is why suspects are being targeted."

The raids were made possible after a police council tax precept rise of 7.95 per cent.

This means £2.7million extra cash is being pumped into tackling serious and organised crime this year.

Police said the raids were the start of an clampdown which will see a 'ring of steel' around East Lancashire.

Insp Chris Saville who was in charge of the operation said: "We have demonstrated our determination to disrupt and target those suspected of dealing drugs in Hyndburn.

"This operation has been made possible due to extra resources the constabulary will receive through the increase in council tax.

"This activity should send a stern message to those people who think they can commit crime in Hyndburn that we will target you and endeavour to bring you to justice."
