U.K:'Long sentence' for cannabis man News BBC News Wednesday 21 May 2008 Martin Kerfoot, 40, was caught in his Newtownards transport firm in October 2006 with 3.5 tonnes of cannabis resin. The 40-year-old, of Seacliff Road in Bangor, admitted arranging the shipment but denied he knew drugs were inside. The jury rejected his claims he was acting under duress after being threatened by loyalist paramilitaries. Kerfoot was a partner in a removal and storage company. When police raided the premises, they found the drugs were in the process of being unloaded from the lorry into a rental van and a company vehicle. Quite frankly, the courts are going to drop a ton of bricks on anyone involved in this Mr Justice McLaughlin The drugs had been brought into the country in hollowed-out wooden doors which were stacked into pallets, loaded into a lorry and imported from Spain. Kerfoot was found guilty of importing the cannabis, supplying a controlled drug to another and possessing a Class C drug with intent to supply. The court heard the cannabis had an estimated street value of £13m. As the foreman of the jury read out the guilty verdicts, Kerfoot put his head in his hands. The judge said it was an "unprecedented cargo of cannabis coming into this country". "Quite frankly, the courts are going to drop a ton of bricks on anyone involved in this," he said. He added: "Some businessmen seem to think the answer to their problems is to make a quick buck from drugs." The judge refused a request for continuing bail and remanded Kerfoot in custody to be sentenced at a later date. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7410945.stm
