Letter: Drugs do Work

Liverpool Echo

Thursday 22 May 2008

AS an ordinary citizen of Liverpool, I am appalled by the decision of the New Labour government to make cannabis even more unavailable to needy people whose medical needs are not catered for by the NHS.

As an 88-year-old man I am tired of being told that, owing to my age, I cannot get the medical attention I need. Now there is an age-old solution to many sufferers of numerous ailments and diseases, namely cannabis sativa, which is being denied by an imbecilic law.

Have these ill-informed MPs been indoctrinated by the present PM and health secretary to deny the people of their country the benefit that cannabis offers on the shallow untruth that it is as harmful as cocaine and other drugs sold today?

Are they not aware of the many thousands to whom cannabis is a boon?

I unfortunately suffer from chronic osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis of the spine, angina, gout and loss of strength caused by treatment for cancer. My medical practitioners, however good they are, cannot help any more to relieve my suffering because they are bound to obey the laws of the country – however obsolete they are.
