Police smash their way into home of innocent cancer patient during drug raid Kelly Fenna Daily Post Saturday 07 Jun 2008 BUNGLING police carrying out drugs raids smashed their way into the home of an innocent couple by mistake. They rammed in the door hoping to find drug pushers at the property in Llangefni – but instead they burst upon a frail man suffering from cancer and his horrified wife. The man, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, was left so shocked and upset at the sight of officers in full riot gear he required hospital treatment. The blunder came about during a series of dawn raids targeting drug dealers. Yesterday the couple were still too traumatised to speak of their ordeal and North Wales Police refused to comment on how the mistake had been made or whether any inquiry would be held. Police also refused to say whether an apology and compensation would be offered to the couple. The bungled raid took place just over a week ago but only came to light yesterday when a nearby resident told the Daily Post. The resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “Police rammed down the door of the house but they had got the wrong address. “The man had to be taken to hospital because of the shock as he had just had chemotherapy treatment.” The couple later confirmed what had happened and said they now planned to take legal action against the police. The wife said they had been left shaken by the ordeal, particularly as her husband is currently battling cancer.” A police spokesman claimed it would not be possible to comment on the matter unless the approval was given by the couple in question. He said: “In accordance with the family’s wishes we are not prepared to comment on the matter.” It is believed police had intended to raid a nearby house with a similar address. At the time, officers were taking part in a “misuse of drugs disruption operation” which saw 30 officers executing warrants as part of a major sting. The crackdown hauled in heroin, cocaine and cannabis and saw 11 people arrested. Cannabis plants with a street value in excess of £1,700 were also seized along with £3,000 worth of stolen goods and counterfeit DVDs. At the time, operation commander Inspector Mike Owen hailed its success and said: “North Wales Police will continue to deal with drug offences and associated crime in a fair and robust manner.” This year the force has carried out a string of raids across Conwy, Denbighshire and Wrexham which, police say, are driven by “community intelligence.” http://www.dailypost.co.uk/
