Cannabis farm goes up in smoke
Lancashire Evening Post Monday 09 Jun 2008 Firefighters found 100 plants growing in the living room of a ground floor flat in Harcourt Street, off Brook Street, Plungington, Preston at 5.15am on Sunday. Cables on the hydroponics system – the equipment used to cultivate the illegal drugs – had caught fire and spread to the curtains. A neighbour raised the alarm when smoke got into his flat and set off his alarm. Police are hunting a woman who lives at the flat. She is believed to have been out of the country for a week. Police were attempting to trace her and the owner of the property. The living room was left damaged but it is unclear if any of the cannabis plants were destroyed. Neighbours living in the quiet cul-de-sac said there were regular visitors to the flat and the woman drove a "flash car" but many were shocked at the drugs find. One elderly resident, said: "I can't believe it - they're very quiet. I can't say they've been rowdy people. It's always quiet and peaceful round here." Another man said the woman who lived at the flat was in her 20s. He said: "Everybody seems surprised. "I suspected something going on because she used to go away for weeks on end and there used to be lots of strange cars coming and going - people who we've never seen before. "Everything was quite secretive. Friends used to come and stop over – male and female." There was nobody in at the time of the fire and no smoke alarm was fitted. The living room was damaged by smoke. Police were at the scene for several hours yesterday with a lone female officer guarding the front door at lunchtime. Glass in the white front door was smashed and there was a green horseshoe nailed to the wall. Det Sgt John Crichton, of Preston CID, said the plants were due to be taken out of the property late on Sunday. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/Cannabis-farm-goes-up-in.4164511.jp
