AN INTERNATIONAL sailing champion who was caught growing 20 cannabis plants in the attic of his rented home has had his sentence adjourned.

"Multitalented" Ronan Reddy (30), has a 16-year-old drug habit and was described as someone "who had lived half a life and had not used the talents he had been graced with".

He represented Ireland as a 14 and 15 year-old in two World and one European sailing championships, and was on the Irish team that won the International Sailing Federation Cup.

He was also described as "a talented qualified chef" and was also recently invited to Hong Kong to paint murals in a luxury apartment.

Reddy of Waterloo Road, Ballsbridge, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to cultivation of cannabis plants and possession of cannabis resin -- with an estimated street value of €6,000 -- for sale or supply at the house in Stepaside on February 7, 2007.
