Teenager is spared jail for selling cannabis Hilary Cundle Pontypridd Observer Wednesday 23 Jul 2008 Ian Rhys Davies, 18, of Clydach Close, Glyncoch, was sentenced to four months in a young offender’s institution by Pontypridd Magistrates Court, after he admitted jointly possessing drugs with intent to supply. But judge Vivian Manning-Davies suspended the sentence for two years after describing the case as a “sad and bizarre” chapter in the defendant’s life. Court heard Davies and a friend set up in business together with the intention of selling cannabis to friends. Davies hoped to make enough money out of the business to buy a motorbike. Judge Manning-Davies, outlining the prosecution case, said the pair went to Newport and bought seven grams of cannabis which they divided into seven plastic bags. The bags, designed with cannabis-leaf motifs and emblazoned with the name Deals on Wheels, each contained one gram of cannabis. But police officers made contact with Davies’ business partner and found drugs in her handbag. On hearing his friend had been arrested, Davies went to the police station where she was being questioned and confessed. District judge Vivian Manning-Davies said: “Without your confession there would have been no admissible evidence against you.” Judge Manning-Davies said the pre-sentence report showed that Davies was vulnerable and immature. He said Davies, a person of previous good character, has shown remorse and was ambitious and hardworking. But Davies, who has mental health problems, was also ordered to complete 12 months supervision by probation and undergo medical treatment and drug rehabilitation. Passing sentence judge Manning-Davies said: “Drug dealers usually go straight into custody, but this is an unusual case and the sentence can be suspended. If you fall down on the supervision, the custodial sentence will be triggered. “Otherwise this sad and bizarre chapter in you life will be at an end”. http://www.walesonline.co.uu/ _________________ http://astore.amazon.co.uk/webbooks05 http://www.ccguide.org.uk/
