Ireland: Jailed for smoking cannabis outside Limerick courthouse Anne Sheridan Limerick Leader Sunday 27 Jul 2008 Michael Griffin, 21, with an address at 49 Crossroads, Thomondgate, appealed two cases where he received two concurrent prison sentences from the district court for public order charges and possession of drugs for his own use. Mr Griffin received a three-month sentence in February last year after a member of the gardai, who was leaving the district court, smelt cannabis in the vicinity of the courthouse. Mr Griffin was observed throwing the cigarette in the bin and he was then arrested and brought to Henry Street garda station, where he was found in possession of a small bag of cannabis, estimated to be worth €10, for his own personal use. He was also charged on February 3 this year for two public order offences for intoxication in a public place in Longpavement and being threatening and abusive towards gardai. The court heard Mr Griffin has a number of previous convictions including four charges of possession of drugs, possession with intent to supply and assault. Judge Carroll Moran heard that Mr Griffin had been given a chance by the district court to amend his ways, but had a "litany of failed appointments to meet with a probation officer, who gave him umpteen opportunities." His failure to comply with the probation officer led to his re-appearance before the district court, where he received a two-month sentence. Brian McEnery, BL, argued that Mr Griffin should be sent to prison for less than three months, but Judge Moran affirmed the court's decision to impose a three and two month concurrent prison sentence. http://www.limerickleader.ie/
