A TRIP to a music festival ended in a 12-month prison sentence for a Methwold man caught acting as a drugs courier.
Sniffer dogs homed in on former heroin addict Alexander Finlay (27) at Cambridge Railway Station on June 2 last year as he made his way to the city’s Strawberry Fair.

He was found to have 12 wraps of herbal cannabis in his sock and another in his

pocket.

The cannabis, weighing 44 grams, was worth nearly £250 and further 813 grams, worth £4,500, was later discovered by police in his bedroom.

Finlay, of Warren Farm, admitted possessing the drug with intent to supply and was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Norwich Crown Court on Friday.

Christopher Youell, prosecuting, said British Transport Police had carried out a special operation because they considered the fair likely to attract drugs people.

The court heard Finlay had numerous convictions for criminal damage, burglary and motoring offences, but this was his first drugs offence.

Finlay told the police he intended to give some cannabis away, as well as having some himself, and he also claimed to be storing the drugs in his bedroom for someone else.

Neil Guest, for Finlay, said: “He was only holding the drugs for someone else. He had not taken them to the fair to supply others. He was to give the cannabis to someone else.

“He had been asked by a dealer to store it as he owed him £400. He was acting as a courier.”

Mr Guest said his client had been a long-term heroin addict, but was now completely drug-free.

Jailing him, Judge Simon Barham told Finlay: “You were in debt to a drugs dealer and agreed to do his bidding. You delivered drugs to someone else who was going to sell them.”
