Indonesia cuts Corby's sentence by 3 months

Geoff Thompson

ABC News

Sunday 17 Aug 2008

Convicted Australian drug traffickers Schapelle Corby and Renae Lawrence have both received cuts to their prison sentences in Indonesia.

Today is Indonesia's Independence Day and a traditional part of the celebrations is the handing out of sentence cuts to prisoners.

Only those prisoners whose appeals have finished are eligible for remissions.

Australian cannabis smuggler Schapelle Corby was a beneficiary with her name being read out at Bali's Kerobokan Prison this morning.

She received a three-month reduction to her 20 year prison term.

A member of the Bali Nine heroin smuggling ring Renae Lawrence also received a sentence cut of four months.

Under new restrictions prisoners convicted since last October of offences relating to drugs, terrorism, corruption or illegal logging will not be eligible for sentence reductions.
