Cannabis Users Call Heartless Jacqui Smith To Account In Redditch

Members of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) are publicly calling for Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to attend the legalise cannabis rally in the town centre in her Redditch constituency on Saturday October 18th.

The protest will be in the centre of Redditch from 11 am and is supported by the Legalise Cannabis Alliance in order to draw attention the injustice inherent in the Misuse of Drugs Act and the failure of cannabis prohibition.

The day is organised by “Pinky under the protestlondon banner. Pinky staged a protest in London earlier this year over the continued prosecution of people who claim medical benefit and to demand exemption from prosecution where the user has their doctor’s permission. This time, however, in Redditch, Pinky is calling for legalisation for all uses.

Pinky said: “Jacqui Smith has ignored my letters and proved in her speech that she's a heartless person who does not care about medical cannabis users. Ms Smith has refused a chance to hear real stories from people who suffer and improve the quality of their lives through the use of the cannabis plant and its products.

“Cannabis helps a lot more people than it harms. Those of us who use cannabis without problem and do no harm, should be able do so without fear of prosecution.

“Why ignore us all and even your own council’s advice? Jacqui Smith won’t even have a interview with cannabis users.

“We want to free all cannabis users from prosecution and free the police up from having to arrest people for a victimless crime.”

Alun Buffry, a founder-member of the LCA said: “Several years ago, we challenged the Home Office to explain why our Government insists on punishing people for possession or cultivation of cannabis plants for their own use in their own private homes if they do no harm.

“The only time that any Home Secretary has met with a representative of any legalise cannabis group was just before Charles Clarke was sacked. Since then all attempts at direct communication have been sidetracked or ignored.

“Human Rights law guaranteed that a person’s Private Life, lifestyle, religion or belief should be free from interference from the authorities unless there is a threat to public health, public order, national security or the Rights of others.

“Where the possession or cultivation of cannabis – despite its legal status – poses no such threat, not only is a police raid and arrest unjust then under Human Rights law it is illegal.

“We feel it is time that the Government answered this simple question: why do you arrest people for cannabis even when they have done no harm to others and even when they claim medical or other benefit from it’s use?

“ That is why we call upon the Home Secretary to come and tell us in Redditch. However, we expect the usual response – the diary is full.

”The prohibition of cannabis has been shown to have been a disaster – even government- and UN-appointed bodies of experts have suggested alternatives. It’s time our Government told us why they refuse to listen to their own experts like the ACMD and why they refuse to speak to cannabis users.”
