Letter: No 'factory' in cannabis growth

P J McNeill

Yorkshire Evening Post

Wednesday 08 Oct 2008

I AM fed up of seeing and hearing the expression "cannabis factory" in the media, whenever some poor soul has his privacy savagely invaded, and his life subsequently destroyed, for growing a medically efficacious plant that everybody knows harms nobody (unless you're a Daily Mail reader, or Gordon Brown).

Cannabis is a plant, not a manufactured product: it is its own factory. You grow it, you dry it, you smoke it.

Tesco don't buy their cabbages from a cabbage factory, do they?

I feel that this misnomer is deliberately used by some sections of the media to con the public into thinking of cannabis in the same terms as dangerous, processed 'class A' drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine; the rest just unconsciously absorb it into their vocabulary, and numbly churn it out in every cannabis case write-up.
