Mexican lawmaker's pot proposal goes up in smoke
Otago Daily Times Wednesday 15 Oct 2008 Members of Victor Cirigo's own leftist party, which governs Mexico's capital, are criticising his proposal to decriminalise the sale of up to five grams of marijuana, possession of up to 30 grams, and cultivation of no more than five cannabis plants. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said today the proposal would drive up consumption. Cirigo said legalising pot would cut into traffickers' profits at a time of surging drug-related violence. He said he would ask the city legislature to introduce the reforms in Congress. President Felipe Calderon has proposed offering users treatment instead of jail time. His initiative would not decriminalise possession.
