UK: Pupils suspended after cannabis find

Two schoolboys, described as top of their class, have been suspended after police caught them with cannabis.
The top grade, 16 year-old students from Warblington School, Havant, were seen acting suspiciously on Monday afternoon on their way home from school.

The pair, who were both in uniform, were stopped by officers close to Fairfield Road and found with a small amount of cannabis resin. Both were given a formal caution and police say their case should serve as a warning to other youngsters tempted by drugs.

Keith Chessell, chairman of governors at the school, said: 'They were not found on the school premises and it seems as if they were caught in a random police check up on the Billy Line. They were immediately suspended for five days. The parents have been contacted by the school and are very upset that their boys were smoking this.

'They are nice families and so are the boys which is what makes this so sad. They are hard-working, first- class students and we have never had any trouble with them throughout their time at Warblington.'

Mr Chessell said the school has a robust anti-drugs policy and teachers will come down hard on anyone caught with illegal substances. But he said drugs were a problem with every school and it is their job to teach pupils the dangers.

PC Rob Swift-Simmons, from Havant police, said: 'This should serve as warning to all those who are of the mistaken belief that cannabis is legal and remind them that if caught in possession of cannabis it is still an offence which is punishable by law.

'School authorities at Warblington are aware of the incident and have assisted police. They are investigating and dealing with the matter separately by offering drugs counselling to both youngsters.'

Warblington is a specialist science and mathematics school and was given a rating of good by Ofsted in the most recent inspection last year. The percentage of students gaining five or more A*-G grades is above the national average.
