UK: Cannabis seeds to remain legal
Canna Zine Monday 03 Nov 2008 The Home Office has publicly said: “There are currently no plans for legislation to outlaw the sale of [cannabis] seeds,” and the report goes on to tell of the bouyant, tax-paying trade in cannabis seeds which carries on with the governments blessing. According to the News of the World there are "At least two dozen UK-based firms offering skunk seeds, getting around the law by describing them as “novelties” or “adult souvenirs” but according to one cannabis seed vendor, the newspaper have got it all wrong. A spokesperson for an online seed vendor "The Canna Zine Seed Shop" (http://shop.cannazine.co.uk ) said, "Don't believe the hype". There are a lot of people buying cannabis seeds to grow. Just because the British government refuses to come into line with the rest of Europe by allowing its citizens to supply themselves, the fact remains that growing a small amount of cannabis elsewhere in the European Union is not only legal, but perfectly acceptable too, and any move on the part of the UK government to stop us as EU members, taking part in this multi-million pound 'annual' trade is illegal in itself, and will be fought with all the might we can muster in the European Courts". The article adds, "Buyers range from ordinary people growing a few plants for their own use to criminal gangs making MILLIONS of pounds a year," but in so far as referring to the regular man and woman in the street, who chooses to grow their own supply of cannabis, thats the only mention they get as the newspaper continues with its 'objectivity by-pass', by constantly paying reference to organised criminal cannabis growing, which is ironically, only a tiny fraction of the global cannabis seed business as they predominantly work from clones; cuttings taken from other cannabis plants which is a far faster way of creating the class C substance. But clearly this anti-cannabis view is a standpoint the newspapers own readers disagree with. In the comments section located at the bottom of the article, of 22 comments posted only one could be regarded as slightly opposed to the availability of cannabis seeds with every other comment in favour of the continued trade, and one reader who contacted the British Cannabis Lobby, had this to say; "The fact is if this matter were put to the public vote, with all of the facts presented scientifically, the vast majority would support a limited decriminalisation including allowing people to grow and possess a small amount of cannabis for personal consumption. Would the News of the World ask its readers for their opinions on such an initiative? I'm absolutely sure it would sell truck-loads of newspapers." As yet the News of the World have ignored the question. Do you agree with the sale of cannabis seeds? You can visit the News of the World website and leave your comment and whether you agree or disagree with the sale of cannabis seeds its important for the powers that be to hear your opinion
