Wales: Drug-use pupils banned by school
South Wales Evening Post Friday 28 Nov 2008 The youngsters, all understood to be boys, are pupils at Dwr-y-Felin comprehensive and the drug in question is believed to be Valium. Confirming their exclusion, head of schools Aled Evans told the Post: "Three pupils from Dwr-y-Felin Comprehensive School have been excluded following a serious breach of school rules involving the improper consumption of a prescription drug." He revealed that the matter was now subject to an internal investigation. Mr Evans added: "The pupils are being offered support from specialist services and the school will also provide support and guidance to the pupils on their return." It is not known at this stage how long their exclusion will last. A police spokesman said they had been made aware of the incident and added that a school liaison officer was working with those concerned. Councillor Arthur Davies, who is chairman of governors at Coedffranc Primary School, said the incident was a sorry indictment of today's society. "It is a sad thing they are trying to find solace in any sort of tablets," he said. Councillor Davies added: "Not everyone understands that prescription drugs can themselves be a problem." Blaenhonddan Community Council chairman Mike Richards said the incident appeared to be a worrying sign of the times. "You have to feel sorry as much as annoyed for these children who feel the need to take these drugs", he added. This latest incident follows on from the Post's report earlier this week that a total of four pupils were believed to have been suspended from Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School, after they were caught smoking cannabis before the school day began. Referring to that incident, Mr Evans confirmed it had taken place off school premises and said police had been informed. Speaking at the time, he said: "Acting on information received, Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School has taken disciplinary action against a small number of pupils who have admitted smoking cannabis while on their way to school." He added: "Staff in Neath Port Talbot schools are well placed to provide help and guidance to young people who become involved in drug-related issues."
