UK: Cannabis not way to help health - Norwich judge

Eastern Daily Press

Thursday 18 Dec 2008

A judge warned a man who claimed he smoked cannabis to help his health problems that it was not the way to relieve his ailments.

Glen Carroll, 28, was found to have cannabis with a street value of £350 to £400 when police searched his home. Norwich Crown Court heard.

Nick Methold, prosecuting, said police also seized Carroll's mobile phone and found messages which showed he had been supplying a small number of friends.

They also seized £770 in cash.

Carroll of Goodhale Road, Norwich, admitted being concerned in supplying cannabis and said that he had been using cannabis to alleviate his health problems.

Michael Clare mitigating said that it had not been a commercial operation.

“He was a heavy user of cannabis and friends knew he had a good source. He would source cannabis for them.”

He said occasionally Carroll would make a small profit.

He said Carroll was registered as disabled and also suffered from depression and had used cannabis to alleviate his medical condition.

However he said Carroll had now stopped his cannabis habit.

Judge Alasdair Darroch told him that being concerned in supplying cannabis was a serious matter.

“If you had been selling to all and sundry I would have been sentencing you to prison straight away.”

He added: “You cannot deal with medical ailments with cannabis.”

He jailed Carroll for 26 weeks suspended for 12 months and ordered him to do 140 hours unpaid work. He also made him subject to a 12 month community order and a three month curfew.
