Monday 04 May 2009

Amount of cannabis seized so far is more than four times amount over same period in 2008.

ALGIERS - Algerian police and customs officers have seized more than 16 tonnes of cannabis so far this year - far more than over the same period in 2008, a senior official said Monday.

Officers had so far seized 16.45 tonnes of cannabis this year, said Abdelmalek Sayah, the director general of the National Office against Drugs and Addiction (ONLCDT), APS news agency reported.

That was more than four times the amount for the first quarter of 2008.

They had also arrested 3,569 people, including 22 foreign nationals, among them six Nigerians, five Malians, three Liberians and a Tunisian.

In March, police said that an average of five tonnes of cannabis was being seized every month. At that rate, the total could reach 60 tonnes by the end of 2009.

In 2008, 38 tonnes of the drug were seized, up from just four tonnes in 2007.
