UK: Cannabis campaign on the march
Dorset Echo Tuesday 10 Feb 2009 Mr Starr, 34, from Dorchester, was among the protesters when a demonstration was held outside the House of Parliament in London. The Cannabis Protest was held against the reclassification of cannabis from a class C drug to class B. Mr Starr, who smokes the drug for medicinal reasons and has been cautioned by the police for his behaviour, said: “What a day the Cannabis Protest in London turned out to be. “It was drizzling and we were soaking wet but were determined to see Gordon Brown – just to show him we didn’t care about his unjust and unfounded law which had been rushed into effect.” Now Mr Starr, who is known as Pinky, and fellow campaigners are holding another rally on May 2. Mr Starr said that the reclassificaiton cost the taxpayer more money, used up more police time and criminalised harmless sections of the population. He reckons people should be able to grow their own or buy it from regulated outlets to help stop young people getting their hands on it. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith decided to move the drug up a grade because of fears over the impact of stronger strains of ‘skunk’ on mental health. Under the new regime, police will issue a warning to anyone caught with cannabis for a first offence and fine second-time offenders £80. Anyone caught a third time would be arrested and face a fine and up to five years in prison. http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/
