Gibraltar Chronicle

Wednesday 12 Aug 2009

Around 50 people have been arrested following close cooperation between Spanish and British Police forces that has seen over £40 million worth of drugs seized.

Cocaine with a street value exceeding £10 million was seized on a yacht bound for the UK after starting its journey in the Netherland’s Antilles.

Authorities brought the vessel to the Galician port of Vigo where local based officers discovered around 250kg of narcotics stashed below deck.

Whilst the two crew were arrested, officers on the Costa del Sol were also swooping in on members of an international gang allegedly behind the attempted smuggle.

One Briton was among those arrested alongside others from Spain, Colombia, Italy and the Netherlands.

A number of premises were also raided including ten homes, a seafront restaurant in Marbella, a cafeteria in Fuengirola and a second-hand car dealership.

Police also seized firearms and a large quantity of cash in the raids which were part of a collaboration codenamed “Candelight” between Spanish police and the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency.

According to a Spanish statement, officers had also arrested 39 suspects and seized 500kg of cocaine, 39kg of heroin and three tonnes of cannabis. A haul which could fetch over £30 million at street level.
