Malaysia: Fisherman given 10 years' jail, 10 strokes for drug possession

KUANTAN, Mon: A fisherman was sentenced to 10 years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan by the High Court here today for possession of 257.46gm of cannabis last year.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mariana Yahya ordered Wan Mohd Sapri Wan Musa, 35, to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on Feb 19, 2008.

Wan Mohd Sapri pleaded guilty to an amended charge with possessing the drug near a food stall at Gerai PPD Tanjung Gemuk, Rompin, about 6.40pm on Feb 19 last year.

He was initially charged with drug trafficking, but amended to that of possession by the court.

In mitigation, Wan Mohd Sapri, who was represented by lawyer Muhd Hisham Abdul Rahim , said he had a wife and three children, aged between six and 12 to support.
