Cannabis use in Spain amongst under eighteens has risen 50% in the last 15 years

A psychiatrist in the Child and Juvenile Unit of the Hospital Donostia of San Sebastián Javier Palomo has warned, in an interview with Efe, the risk of the onset of mental illness in adolescents and young people by their consumption of cannabis, but also of ecstasy and speed, which in many cases may have "tragic" consequences.

Despite the mental damage that may result from the consumption of cannabis, adolescent Spaniards believe that the drug carries less risk than other legal or illegal substances such as tobacco or alcohol.

Dr. Palomo says that more than half the patients admitted to the Child and Youth Psychiatric Unit in Donostia Hospital with serious problems, are teenagers who use or have used drugs at some point in their lives. The consumption of drugs, in general, can produce symptomatic tables consisting of the alteration of feelings, perceptions and thoughts for a limited time, in what is known as "mental disorders induced by drugs."

They can also contribute, along with environmental and genetic factors among others, the emergence of disorders such as schizophrenia, which has been shown that even a genetic predisposition, may not be apparent with the absence of drugs.
