UK: Cannabis grower is spared jail

A CANNABIS grower found with over a kilo of the drug at his home has been spared prison after a court heard it was for his personal use.
Police discovered 20 cannabis plants, 18 of which were ready for harvest, when they raided David Bruce’s farmhouse in Farcet, near Peterborough in April.

Officers also found more than five grams of cocaine and 1.05kg of cannabis resin – enough to make over 4,000 joints, according to police.

Bruce (45), of Conquest Drove, had pleaded guilty to producing and possessing cannabis and possessing cocaine at Peterborough Crown Court. He was given a suspended prison sentence yesterday after saying it was for personal use.

Defending, Andrew Hallworth said: “He has been addicted to cannabis since he was 18 and smoked it in its pure form without tobacco. That amount would only have lasted him four to five months.”

The court heard Bruce started smoking more cannabis last September when his work as a ceramic tiler dried up in the recession and he had more time on his hands.

He started growing his own a few months later after being threatened by drug dealers when he complained about the quality of cannabis he was buying.

Mr Hallworth added Bruce had been punished already as his wife and two children have now left him.

Bruce was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, and ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work for producing cannabis. He was also given a concurrent five-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, for possessing cannabis and cocaine as well as being ordered to pay £300 costs.
