Malaysia: Van Driver Gets 12 Years Jail, 10 Strokes For Drug Possession
Bernama Monday 05 Oct 2009 Shamsukahar Omar, 43, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at a house at lot 1/1218, Kampung Baru Chengal Lempong, Balok, at about 1.30am on March 7, 2007. Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mariana Yahya ordered the sentence to run from the date of his arrest on March 6, 2007. The offence carries a maximum life imprisonment and at least 10 strokes of the rotan. He was originally charged with trafficking which carries the mandatory death sentence. Mariana told Shamsukahar to repent and not commit such offence again because it would hurt not only himself but also his family and the nation. Earlier, in mitigation, defence counsel Bob Arumugam said Shamsukahar had a wife and three children to support. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud pressed for a deterrent sentence because he said drugs had become the country's number one enemy since the 1970s. http://www.bernama.com.my/bernama/state_news/news.php?id=444566&cat=et
