Facebook Support Group Rallies For Prof. David Nutt Dev Meyers The Examiner Sunday 01 Nov 2009 The group, set up by pro-reform campaigner Levent Akbulut from London, has already attracted over two and a half thousand members in less than 24 hours and that number is expected to rise fast as word gets out of its existence. Professor Nutt was fired from his position on the ACMD over remarks he made concerning government drugs policy. Professor Nutt accused ministers of 'devaluing' and 'distorting' the evidence they use to classify drugs in the United Kingdom. He also said drugs classification was being politicised. Earlier this week Prof Nutt used a lecture at King's College, London, to attack what he called the "artificial" separation of alcohol and tobacco from illegal drugs and in an interview he gave to the BBC's Newsnight program Professor Nutt aluded to the fact his termination was as a result of the fact he was not prepared to give the government the advice they needed to fit in with their policies. Members of the Facebook group have posted their outrage at Professor Nutt's sacking. In the last 12 hours comments have been posted thick and fast, showing the support Mr Nutt has amongst members of the voting public. Gordon Greenall said "A goverment that rejects expert advice and supports lies and misinformation is not fit to govern. Step down now Gordon, take your whole crew and just sod off," and member Sally Mackenzie was far more succinct and to the point when she said "Urm he's the expert........hello"! Matthew Hale got straight to the point by saying "Alan Johnson - ex postman. David Nutt - professor of psychopharmacology at Bristol University and head of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London. Clearly Alan Johnson is vastly more qualified to make this decision along with his equally talentless, disingenuous and parasitic colleagues", whilst Jesse White has some questions she would like answered regarding our nations drugs policies. Her comment read "This is madness. Major party politicians are pathetic, amoral cowards, who will willingly abandon any scientific judgement if it would lead to policies which would upset the tabloids. If drugs policy is not based on scientific evaluation, then what is it based on? Tarrot cards? The cycles of the moon? Or popular media opinion, perhaps"? There are quite literally hundreds more comments so please drop by and check them out. Would you like to have your say?
