Marijuana Minister Gets Two Years In Jail

WFTV

Friday 11 Dec 2009

Brevard County's self-proclaimed "marijuana minister" is going to jail. Steven Swallick was sentenced Friday to two years behind bars.

Swallick was arrested in 2008 after police found a large marijuana grow operation in his Palm Bay home. Steven Swallick claims he is the minister of a church called Hawaiian Cannabis Ministries.

There was no reaction from Steven Swallick at all when he heard his sentencing. In addition to the two years in jail, he will face three years of probation that will include monthly screening for marijuana use and he's forbidden from putting any equipment used to grow plants inside his home.

"I have no doubt that he will continue his faith, whether the practice will involve that, I do not know," defense attorney Gregory Schwendeman said.

"He can't grow marijuana and distribute it in the community and if he does continue to do that then he'll go back to prison," prosecutor Bill Respess said.

Prosecutors gave Swallick a light sentence in part because he has no prior convictions. Swallick could have gotten up to ten years in state prison.
