US: Marijuana Legalization One Step Closer To November Ballot
KIONrightnow.com Tuesday 15 Dec 2009 "I think it's dangerous for these people to use it and I'm concerned about that approval that comes with legalization," says Richard Bull. Richard Bull is a counselor at the Stimulant Abuse Recovery Center in Salinas. He helps people overcome drug abuse. Bull says legalizing pot would be problematic, an easier way for his clients to get back on more serious drugs. "Our experience working with men and women who are trying to get off illegal drugs is that the use of alcohol or marijuana impairs the judgment enough that they'll usually start with that and go back to the harder drugs." Organizers say they will submit the signatures to the state next month. "What this initiative will do importantly is legalize up to one ounce of cannabis for any adult 21 and over and it also allows the cities and counties local control on how to tax and regulate adult sales and commercial cultivation," says Dale Clare with Oaksterdam University. Bull says he fears the outcome of pot legalization. "If they try to replace the drug with alcohol or marijuana, it makes it very difficult to recover from using abusing illegal drugs," says Bull. So far, Sand City and Gilroy city leaders say they are opposed to legalizing. We tried to reach Salinas officials tonight, but it was late. We'll try calling back tomorrow and we'll let you know what they say. http://www.kionrightnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=11677680
