US: Marijuana could be made legal in California next year

An ample amount of signatures have been collected by Californians to ensure the Tax and Regulate Initiative will appear on the November 2010 ballot. The initiative would give local governments the authority to tax and regulate the sale of marijuana to adults 21 and over. It would increase penalties for giving marijuana to a minor, prohibit smoking in public and while minors are present.

In just two months, advocates of the initiative were able to collect more than 680,000 signatures, which leads us to believe Californians are ready for a change. Richard Lee, chief supporter of the initiative, said "It's long overdue. It was very easy. People were eager to sign. We heard they were ripping the petitions out of people's hands to do it."

Between $7 and $20 million are expected to be raised to pass the measure, although advocates expect tough opposition.

If passed, this act could give California about $1.4 billion in annual revenue---revenue that is sorely needed. "This initiative is moral, sensible and the right thing to do," said Rabbi Jeffrey Kahn of the Interfaith Drug Policy Initiative in a statement released Monday. "Regulating cannabis is a common sense solution that puts our priorities in order and reflects our values."
