US: New Jersey Passes Medical Marijuana Bill, But no Pot for Stress

New Jersey became the 14th state in the country on Monday, to legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The New Jersey Compassionate Medical Marijuana Act easily passed in both houses and Gov. Jon Corzine is expected to sign the measure before he leaves office next week. Although the bill would allow pot to be used to ease many chronic and debilitating medical conditions, the lawmakers say they learned from mistakes made in California and purposely excluded general conditions, like stress and anxiety from the bill.

The bill would allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to patients holding state-issued identification cards. The patients could then legally purchase medicinal pot from registered alternative treatment centers. The identification cards would be issued by the Department of Health and Senior Services.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, one of the bill’s sponsors, told CNN that the bill would be one of the strictest in the nation. "I believe that this bill will be model legislation for states here on out that will look to (be) legalizing marijuana. We looked at the pitfalls of California and made a more restrictive bill," said Gusciora. The lawmaker pointed to the exclusion of stress and anxiety from the list of approved conditions. "I feel like every college student would qualify for stress and anxiety, and has qualified in California," added Gusciora.

Once the bill is signed into law by the governor, it would take an additional six to nine months to take effect.
