Cannabis shop in Holland had too many drugs
AmsterdamNews.net Thursday 25 Mar 2010 The owner of the Checkpoint coffee shop in Terneuzen which used to serve up to 3,000 customers a day, was fined and jailed. Fifteen members of staff were also fined. Owner Meddie Willemsen was sentenced to a 16-week prison term after being convicted of holding more than the maximum tolerated amount of drugs at the cafe. He was convicted of breaking drugs laws, exporting drugs and membership of a criminal organisation. Prosecutors had asked for a 28 million euro fine, but lowered the amount saying authorities had been culpable in allowing Checkpoint to grow without being monitored. The town of Terneuzen is close to the Belgian border, where visitors from as far away as France used to flood in, especially to visit the coffee house. The massive amount of drugs sold to tourists in the Terneuzen coffeeshop was estimated by prosecutors to be at least ten kilograms of marijuana and hashish per day. The Netherlands has an official tolerance policy toward marijuana and it is sold in many licensed coffee houses. Dutch coffeeshops are only allowed a maximum trading stock of 500 grams of cannabis at any particular time. Coffeeshop customers are each allowed to purchase up to 5 grams. http://www.amsterdamnews.net/story/616166
