UK: Cannabis Couple Kicked Out of Leicester Home
Leicester Mercury Friday 16 Apr 2010 A court yesterday gave Richard Watkinson and Christine Flavell two weeks to leave their home in Braunstone Frith, Leicester. Leicester County Court's ruling means the couple are the first council tenants in the city to have their home repossessed because of cannabis cultivation. Officers from New Parks police station raided the Yew Tree Drive home last year and found 116 plants worth an estimated £25,000 in the loft. The house's wiring had been tampered with to power the lamps promoting the plants' growth using mains electricity. Engineers from power firm E-on said the wiring to bypass the electricity meter meant there was a serious fire risk to the couple's house and neighbouring houses. Leicester City Council's cabinet member for housing, Councillor Paul Westley, said: "I'm horrified that these people could have jeopardized lives, and I welcome the action taken by the courts and the city council. "I wish to send a clear message that anyone involved in illegal activity will face the full force of the law which the council has at its disposal." Sergeant Adam Wardle, who leads the New Parks police beat team, said: "A number of fires have been caused through misuse of electricity across the city in circumstances where a cannabis-growing factory is operating." Neil Canham, manager of Leicester antisocial behaviour unit, said: "We are very satisfied with the result of this latest court case." The pair were sentenced at Leicester Crown Court in November last year after admitting cannabis cultivation. Watkinson was given a 20-month jail term, which he is still serving. Flavell was handed a 10 month suspended sentence. http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/news/Cannabis-couple-kicked-home/article-2027154-detail/article.html
