Legalization of Marijuana Activist Jack Herer - Aka "The Hemperor" - Dead At 70!
Gather.com Friday 16 Apr 2010 Shortly after 11 a.m., the award-winning author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes," a book that many supporters of marijuana have cited in the fight to legalize cannabis, passed away at his home in Eugene, Oregon. After speaking at the Portland Hempstalk festival last September, Herer suffered a heart attack and reportedly had a tough row to hoe on his road to recovery due to several other health issues he was dealing with. However, the heart attack last year was not the first Herer experienced in his life. He suffered a heart attack and stroke in the summer of 2000, which, as one might expect after having a stroke, made speaking and using the right side of his body a challenge. Herer, who was born in New York City on June 18, 1939, played off the title of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" when he penned his book with a similar name in 1985. He also wrote a book called "Grass." The hemp legend, who was inducted into the Counterculture Hall of Fame, also ran unsuccessfully twice to become the U.S. President during his lifetime. For being such a strong support of marijuana, a type of cannabis was named after Herer. My evaluation: While I'm more of a beer man and never got high (well, unless contact highs count), cannabis lovers everywhere ought to do their thing Friday at 4:20 a.m. or p.m. to honor this man considering how much time and effort he put into trying to make marijuana a legal drug for people to use nationwide. While I may not be a drug enthusiast, I was impressed with how dedicated Herer was to the cause and you have to respect that. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978175801
