Cannabis Campaigners Demand Fair Treatment

Press Release: April 16 2010
No Embargo
From the Legalise Cannabis Alliance

Campaigners who are part of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) are
demanding a fairer treatment from the next Government and equal
treatment in law to those that choose to drink alcohol.

Chris Baldwin, Campaign Coordinator for the LCA and who has previously
contested Parliamentary seats in Worthing, said : "The Labour Party?'s
election manifesto is called 'A future fair for all?'. Perhaps a more
appropriate title would have been '?A future fair for some?.'?

"There are millions of people in Britain who will not be looking forward
to a fair future because they use cannabis. In the eyes of the law these
people are criminals even though they are doing no harm or posing no
threat."

Chris, who cites himself as an example, says: "I am sixty years old,
disabled and I live alone. I use cannabis in the privacy of my own home
which is a criminal act but where?s the victim in this crime? Despite
the fact that I obey the law in every other way the Government
classifies me as a criminal because of my preferred choice as an adult
to use cannabis.

"The Government claims that prohibition is necessary to protect young
people but in reality this is not the case.

"Prohibition creates the illicit market where there are no rules or
regulations and no minimum age required and where cannabis can be
adulterated with toxic substances that may pose serious health risks to
users - far great risks than cannabis itself.. There is no protection
for the consumer or the young. Despite this politicians keep their heads
in the sand and refuse to listen to any reasonable arguments.

"Millions of innocent people are being criminalised and alienated
because of cannabis prohibition.

"We have tried to engage the Government in dialogue but it appears that
our views are not important. When we ourselves stood for election, at
least we had a platform - now despite repeated requests to the Home
office for consultation, we are ignored

"Gordon Brown may spout on about a fairer future for all, but the
millions of cannabis users are still going to be excluded and targeted
without justification."

Notes for Editors:

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance was a registered political party in the
UK from 1999 to 2006, when it disbanded and continued functioning as a
pressure group.
